On the way back to New York from Boston, we decided to make a day trip to Newport, RI. The night before we booked a table at 23 Bowen’s for a “light lunch”… ha! we should have known better. Located on the Pier and right in the middle of everything, 23 Bowen’s is exactly what you would expect from a seafood restaurant in New England.

Chilled Seafood Platter

Ok, so in the intro I said that this restaurant is what you would expect. I was wrong. We came here with the goal of eating some delicious local seafood, and boy did we get our money’s worth. We ordered the Chilled New England Shellfish Sampler. Our waiter asked “small or large”, of course we went large. When this platter came out, our jaws dropped. This platter was insane. For $99, you get two (TWO!) lobsters, 8 oysters, 8 littleneck clams, and 8 shrimp. That is an incredible amount of seafood for that price. Of course, this being New England, the seafood was incredibly fresh and tasty. I lost count of the amount of passerbys who literally stopped in their tracks to admire this platter. Sitting directly on the boardwalk, I think 23 Bowen’s may have us to thank for an uptick in reservations that evening 😉

Because this clearly wasn’t enough seafood for me, I also ordered a chilled lobster roll and fries. Delicious. It had been years since my first visit to Newport and I have plenty of time to envision what my return trip would look like. A bright sunny day, cold beer and fresh seafood. 23 Bowen’s delivered this experience and then some!
